The abortion pill, also referred to as medical abortion or medication abortion, is actually two different pills: the first pill is taken at the Tulsa Women’s Clinic, and then the other pill is taken no longer than 72 hours later, at home.
The first pill, Mifepristone, blocks the hormone necessary for pregnancy and the second pill, Misoprostol, stimulates your uterus to cramp, bleed and expel the pregnancy – similar to a miscarriage.
Take the first pill: Mifepristone at Tulsa Women’s Clinic.
The majority of women feel fine after taking the first pill. Occasionally, there is nausea and rarely some bleeding.
Within 24 – 48 hours of taking Mifepristone, you will take the Misoprostol at home.
How you take the Misoprostol will be explained to you before you leave the Tulsa Women’s Clinic.
You will be taking the Misoprostol either by dissolving it in you mouth (against your cheek) or by inserting it vaginally.
The abortion occurs between 6 – 10 hours of taking the Misoprostol at home.
Expect bleeding and cramping that lasts between 6 – 10 hours.
Give yourself 24 hours of bed rest.
Neither Mifepristone or Misoprostol are available at your local pharmacy or through a regular doctor’s office. Tulsa Women’s Clinic has the special training to assist you through the process of taking these medications. The abortion pill is not a form of birth control nor an emergency contraceptive (Plan B).
